I am always curious what people carry in their packs during the different seasons we have in New England. This past winter I wrote a blog post, What’s in My Pack: Winter Edition, I thought I would follow it up with a summer addition. Below are the items I carry with me in the summer, not all at once, but for different hikes/activities. Some of the items are duplicate to my winter pack.
My Pack: When I was an ambassador for the 365 Mile Challenge I got a Deuter Speed Lite 22 Hiking Backpack. This pack has been perfect for all my hiking needs in all the New England seasons and variety of activities my family and I participate in. it is comfortable and fits everything I need to bring with me. In the summer my back does not get too sweaty from wearing it.
Fire Starting Tools: Knowing how to make a fire and having the right tools can be a life saver. Thanks to spending a lot of my life in the woods and having a knowledgable husband. I can make a decent fire, most of the time. I carry a lighter, a ferro rod, and Gofire Fire Starters which are water proof and have a 10 minute burn time to help get a fire started in wet conditions.
Survival Tools: A knife, compass, flashlight, emergency blanket, first aid kit, which contains the basics chapstick, tick and bug spray, sunscreen and biodegradable wipes.
Water and snack: Yeti Bottles hold ice and keep my water cold for a long time and they fit well on the side of my backpack. Kates Bars and Vermont Meat Sticks are my go to snacks on the trail.
Hat/Bandana/sunglasses These are all great for helping with the sun. I am not a fan of sunglasses while hiking as my face gets too sweaty. I prefer a hat to keep the sun out of my eyes. I do like a bandana or a Buff as they are great to stick in a cold stream and wrap around my head on a hot day.
Pack Towel- This is a new item to my back this year. I love to hike/walk to places that I can swim and found carrying a beach down was too bulky especially for three of us. I have found this towel light weight, compatible and dries you off well.
Solar portable charger: My parents bought my a solar charger this spring. This has been a nice addition. You can hook it on your pack while you are hiking and charge you phone. It does need direct sunlight and the charger does not hold charge.
Water Filtration System: this has come in handy if we have used all of our water and there are no springs near by. It is pretty easy to use as well.
Hammock: This is for fun. I love bringing this to a summit that has some trees and it is fun for kids to use as well.
I hope you enjoy the gear that I enjoy and find most helpful during the summer months. I would love to know what you carry in your pack.
